Churches everywhere in Seville, Spain / Iglesias por doquier en Sevilla, España

Image
Plaza de España Seville was not in our plans. We were travelling to Madrid from Morocco and we had a few free days…so, why not? We got down the ferry at Tarifa and we caught a bus to Seville. Three hours later, we were struggling to find a place to stay. We hadn’t realised it was Domingo de Ramos and in southern Spain, Easter is a HUGE deal (I’m planning a separate post for this, so I will say no more). We finally found a small room for a reasonable price, changed our clothes, and joined the crowd in the streets. For a whole week, religious parades overrun the centre streets; people wear characteristic costumes and perform religious scenes. We spent the first day chasing the parades all across town, but the next two days trying to dodge them so we could get to see some of Seville’s architecture. And when you talk about Seville you talk about, churches, churches and more churches. Ranging from Gothic to Baroque to Renascence, the architecture of its churches, Cathedral, muse...

Colured Houses and Cobbled Streets: Guatapé, Colombia / Casas de colores y calles empedradas: Guatapé, Colombia

Image
Guatapé is a picturesque village approximately 85 kilometres East from Medellin. Its colourful facades and the cobble of its streets characterise it. But what makes it a unique place is the art of its “zócalos” (plinths) that tell the story of the village. After walking around and admiring the village’s beauty, I suggest to have lunch at the main square, where you can try the typical dish of the region, “Bandeja Paisa”, that, according to different varieties, consists of rice, meat, fried eggs, fried plantain, sausage, beans, avocado, tomato and “arepas”. Apart from being a delicious traditional meal, it is a good source of energy if you are planning to climb the stairs of the “Peñón”. Peñón (The Rock) Climb the stairs of the Peñón to have a good panoramic view of the region and the dam. This 70 million years old rock is a viewpoint that, after climbing 740 steps, offers a wonderful landscape. The view is not to miss, and even though climbing the steep stairs might b...

The Royal City of Sukhothai, Thailand

Image
Sukhothai is the capital of Sukhothai province in Norhtern Tailand. Its main attraction is Sukhotahi Historical Park , the ruins of the city which was the capital of S ukhothai Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries. This World Heritage Site can be accessed by a 15 minute bus ride from the city, and makes a perfect day trip if you are into history, photography, or you want to spend a relaxing day outdoors. The Historical Park is divided in five sections: the inner city, and the East, West, North and South cities. The entrance fee is 100B per section, or 350B if you want to visit them all. As it is a quite big area, the best way to get around is to rent a bike. There are several places to do so in front of the inner city entrance. Once inside, you are free to wander around as you please. We visited the park in November, and it was very quiet and relaxing. It is a perfect spot to get away from the crowds of tourists that are all around Bangkok and Southern Thailand. It ...
