Churches everywhere in Seville, Spain / Iglesias por doquier en Sevilla, España

Plaza de España Seville was not in our plans. We were travelling to Madrid from Morocco and we had a few free days…so, why not? We got down the ferry at Tarifa and we caught a bus to Seville. Three hours later, we were struggling to find a place to stay. We hadn’t realised it was Domingo de Ramos and in southern Spain, Easter is a HUGE deal (I’m planning a separate post for this, so I will say no more). We finally found a small room for a reasonable price, changed our clothes, and joined the crowd in the streets. For a whole week, religious parades overrun the centre streets; people wear characteristic costumes and perform religious scenes. We spent the first day chasing the parades all across town, but the next two days trying to dodge them so we could get to see some of Seville’s architecture. Guatapé is a picturesque village approximately 85 kilometres East from Medellin. Its colourful facades and the cobble of its streets characterise it. But what makes it a unique place is the art of its “zócalos” (plinths) that tell the story of the village. After walking around and admiring the village’s beauty, I suggest to have lunch at the main square, where you can try the typical dish of the region, “Bandeja Paisa”, that, according to different varieties, consists of rice, meat, fried eggs, fried plantain, sausage, beans, avocado, tomato and “arepas”. Apart from being a delicious traditional meal, it is a good source of energy if you are planning to climb the stairs of the “Peñón”.
